Live Snails
Why you should add snails to your pond
Fish, turtles, ducks, and frogs are among the species that may be found in ponds and water gardens. Snails, on the other hand, are an animal that many pond owners ignore. Many of us thought live freshwater snails were unpleasant as children, and many adults now feel the same way. These species, on the other hand, serve a crucial function in the ecosystem and, when present in your pond, may provide a variety of benefits.
In Ponds, How Do Snails Function?
Because they like to consume algae, they can keep it under control in ponds. Snails should not be thought of as a cure for significant pond issues, especially those regarding water quality. Planktonic algae blooms, for example, can tint your pond water green since they are too tiny for them to devour. Freshwater snails are better adapted to consume slime algae. Some pond owners make the mistake of thinking snails will reduce pond muck. While it is true that the snails will eat the organic debris found in the sludge layer, they will usually choose to eat algae.
How Should Snails Be Used?
Snails should be seen in the same light as fish, frogs, or turtles, as an animal that will enrich and beautify the ecosystem. Snails will assist in circumstances when string algae is present, but they should not be relied on to do so, especially at the price of physically cleaning the pond or using other equipment. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you already have other pets or creatures in the pond, they may mistake the snails for food and prey on them, so proceed with caution when introducing them.If you would like to know anymore information about pond snails and how to manage algae please contact one of our experts here.
