Smith Creek Fish Farm proudly offers healthy, live Paper Shell Crayfish (Faxonius immunis), formerly known as Orconectes immunis. Also commonly called the Calico Crayfish or Grass Crab, these freshwater crayfish are carefully selected, professionally packed with oxygen, and shipped to arrive in the best possible condition.

Our crayfish are shipped directly from our New York State certified fish hatchery using industry-standard live animal shipping methods. Every order is handled with care to help ensure healthy, active crayfish upon arrival.

About Paper Shell Crayfish

Paper Shell Crayfish are a hardy freshwater species native to portions of the central and eastern United States. They are recognized by their relatively thin shell, mottled olive-to-brown coloration, and ability to thrive in a variety of freshwater habitats.

Mating typically occurs during late summer, after which females burrow into the substrate to overwinter while carrying their eggs. A single female may carry up to 300 eggs through the winter, with hatching generally occurring in late spring. Newly hatched crayfish remain attached to the female for one to two weeks before becoming independent.

Shipping Information

Orders are typically shipped Monday through Wednesday to reduce the risk of weekend transit delays. During periods of excessive heat or cold, shipments may be postponed to protect the health of the crayfish.
