FAQ

How often is this availability list updated?

We update this page weekly during the 2026 season. Stock can change quickly due to harvest schedules and demand, so we recommend checking back before you drive out.

Do I need to place an order before coming for pickup?

For many items, walk-in pickup is fine, but larger orders (especially trout, game fish, and bulk forage) are best reserved in advance to ensure availability. If you’re traveling a long distance, placing an order ahead is strongly recommended.

Are your fish live and available for local pickup?

Yes — these are live fish for pickup at our hatchery in Western New York, including trout, bass, minnows, and koi (seasonal availability varies).

What fish do you typically carry?

Availability varies by week, but commonly includes:

  • Trout (seasonal)
  • Bass (seasonal)
  • Minnows / forage fish
  • Koi (seasonal)

How are fish packaged for transport?

Our team oxygen-bags fish for safe, stress-reduced transport. Most customers do great with a cooler or tote to keep bags stable and protected from temperature swings.

What should I bring for pickup?

We recommend bringing:

  • Coolers or totes to secure bagged fish
  • A towel/blanket to reduce sliding and block sunlight
  • Extra space in your vehicle so bags stay upright

How long can fish stay in the bag?

In most cases, fish can travel several hours when properly oxygen-bagged and kept out of heat/sun. Avoid opening bags during transport and keep them stable and cool.

Do you offer delivery in Western New York?

Yes — truck delivery may be available for trout, game fish, and forage fish when orders meet delivery minimums. Contact us for current minimums, pricing, and routes.

Are your fish disease-free / certified?

Yes — our fish are NYSDEC-certified disease-free for 2026. You can view the current Fish Health Certification Report via the link on this page.

Can you help me choose what to stock in my pond?

Absolutely. If you tell us your pond size, depth, location, and goals (fishing, forage, weeds, aesthetics), we can recommend a stocking plan and timing.

Do you sell pond and lake supplies on-site?

Yes — we carry a range of pond and lake supplies, including items related to fountains, aeration, and maintenance (seasonal availability varies). Visit in-store to see the full selection.

What if the item I want isn’t listed this week?

It may be out of stock or not in season yet. Check back next week, follow our Facebook updates, or contact us to ask about upcoming availability.

Why do I see the same product name multiple times in the list?

Some items have multiple sizes or options (for example: different bag sizes, counts, or fish size classes). The table reflects those variations.

What’s your refund/return policy on live fish?

Because live fish are perishable and condition can change after pickup, sales are typically final once fish leave our facility. If there’s an issue at pickup, tell our staff immediately so we can address it before you leave.

Where are you located?

Smith Creek Fish Farm is centrally located in Western New York, about an hour from Buffalo and Rochester.
